KILLER LEARNER DRIVER WAS DOING TWICE LIMIT
Sunday Mercury
|May 18, 2025
A LEARNER driver who killed a woman and caused life-changing injuries to her husband in a head-on crash in Redditch has been jailed.
Khizer Ali only held a provisional licence and had no insurance when he drove at double the speed limit in a VW Golf on April 23 last year.
He left a car wash and was clocked doing 61mph in a 30mph zone on Enfield Industrial Estate and then 62mph on the a 30mph Windsor Road, narrowly missing a car after he swerved into the wrong carriageway.
Ali then went around the Sainsbury's roundabout twice, ignoring the correct lanes and drove on to the A441 Alve-church Highway at “full throttle” at around 2.30pm.
He then lost control through “reckless and dangerous” driving and hit the Vauxhall Meriva of Valerie Ayres, 65, and her husband David, 70, who had been travelling from Alvechurch to Redditch to go shopping.
Ali was on the wrong side of the road and hit them head-on travelling at 59mph in a 40mph zone. The force of the crash pushed the Vauxhall into the car behind it.
Valerie was killed instantly in the crash and David suffered life-changing injuries. Shortly before the crash, Ali had been driving his sister's car but then they swapped cars, with Ali getting into their mother’s Golf, a Motability scheme vehicle that only his mother and sister were insured on.
