Why the players who carried a nation’s hopes to the promised land should decide if Harvey gets on the plane next summer

- BY MICHAEL GANNON

THE head says if Harvey Barnes wants to jump on the Steve Clarke World Cup bus then shift over and give him a seat.

The heart says nae luck pal, you've had your chance. This one is for the guys who got us there.

And here's the thing, when does the head ever win when it comes to Scotland? Most of them are still spinning from the other night.

We're a few days on and in an age when attention spans could give goldfish a run for their money, yet Tuesday night will remain unforgettable for everyone. Everything about it was sensational.

It wasn't the perfect performance. It wasn't the perfect campaign either.

But to do it like that, in total Roy of the Rovers fashion, was pretty much perfect.

There will be books and songs written about the other night for years to come.

There hasn't been that kind of outburst of national euphoria in a generation. Maybe ever.

That's what made it so special.

Us Generation X mob can just about remember what it was like when Scotland did get to World Cups.
