Literacy programme brings lasting change to Vryburg schools

STELLALANNDER-VRYBURG: Over the past three years, a focused literacy initiative has been transforming the reading abilities of Grade 3 learners in the Vryburg area.

The programme, implemented in three local primary schools, has led to remarkable improvements in reading fluency, comprehension, and learner confidence. Funded by Waterloo Solar in collaboration with the READ Foundation, the initiative was designed to support Grade 3 and 4 learners by addressing early gaps in reading development. Through structured, interactive learning sessions, pupils are now able to sound out letters, read basic words independently, and demonstrate stronger text understanding, skills which many previously struggled to master. Teachers have observed a clear shift. Learners are not only more confident in their reading but are also better equipped to answer comprehension questions and engage with texts meaningfully.
