WESTWOOD TREBLE FIRES UP DRAGONS

FIRST-HALF hat-trick by centre Joe Westwood helped the Dragons sign off preseason with a entertaining 33-28 victory over the Scarlets at Rodney Parade.

WESTWOOD TREBLE FIRES UP DRAGONS

The two sides shared nine tries in Newport as they ended their preparations ahead of the new United Rugby Championship campaign later this month.

The Dragons take on Ulster in their opening fixture, with the Scarlets hosting Munster on the same week end.

Both sides welcomed a host of Wales stars back, as the two clubs ramped things up ahead of the new campaign - all against the backdrop of the Welsh Rugby Union's proposals to reduce the number of professional men’s teams in Wales from four to two.

Wales back-rower Taine Plumtree had opened the scoring for the Scarlets after eight minutes, crossing following good work by Joe Hawkins and Ioan Nicholas.

However, the Dragons didn’t take long to respond with captain Angus O'Brien crossing after 12 minutes.

After Shane Lewis-Hughes went close on 20 minutes, there was no stopping Westwood for the first of his tries out wide to move the Men of Gwent ahead.
