More jobs set to go at Swansea University

SWANSEA University has opened a voluntary severance scheme for staff as it grapples to balance its budget despite already making cuts.

The university said the scheme would be open for professional services staff until the new year.

A new scheme will also be open to some academic staff to avoid compulsory redundancy.

In September, the university announced £30m cuts this academic year - £25m from staff costs, but did not confirm which subject areas have been identified for further savings.

A spokesperson said the university said: "As these plans remain under development, we will not be commenting further at this stage."

Compulsory redundancies have not been ruled out but the university said they would be a last resort.

But the UCU union warned compulsory job losses were a red line and may prompt industrial action.
