Chiefs' keeper dilemma Odacom
Soccer Laduma
|March 27, 2025
With 27 matches played this season, Kaizer Chiefs have used three different goalkeepers. Bruce Bvuma has started 17 of those fixtures with three opportunities for Brandon Petersen and seven appearances in the starting line-up for Fiacre Ntwari.
-
The latter started the opening seven matches of this season before falling out of favour completely. In the last 20 games in all competitions, he has been left in the stands on 12 occasions with eight matches as an unused substitute. In this feature, we look at the three options at Chiefs in the post-Itumeleng Khune era. With rumours of a new signing in goal during almost every transfer window, we ask whether this is an area of weakness for the Glamour Boys or are they in good shape between the sticks for the foreseeable future?
Ntwari money down the drain?
In the off-season, Chiefs decided to spend big on a goalkeeper despite Bvuma having a very strong finish to last season. A fee in the region of R5.3 million was agreed with TS Galaxy for Fiacre Ntwari, according to various sources. Many expected the Rwanda international to solve the goalkeeping problem position for years to come. It was very harsh on Bvuma, but if Ntwari proved an upgrade, it would have been money well spent by the club and the Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr.
Instead, Ntwari has not made an appearance since Chiefs' 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns in the Carling Knockout on November 2. The transfer fee now looks like wasted funds and the player himself is surely not happy at being signed to be the number one but now finding himself with a watching brief on matchdays. It poses a big decision for the Glamour Boys as to whether they look to sell Ntwari and recoup some of their outlay, whether they loan him out to iron out any weaknesses they see in his game, or whether they hold onto him and see how the next 12 months play out. As it stands, Ntwari has kept one clean sheet with 11 goals leaked when he starts.

I'm not happy about it
Marumo Gallants may have fallen just short in the Carling Knockout Final, but their spirited run to the showpiece at a sold-out Peter Mokaba Stadium reminded many of the club's fighting identity.

Let's become role models
We live in an era where positive role models can be scarce, which means the next generation feels lost as there are no examples they can relate to in their immediate communities.
