PM learns from Margaret's courage with vow to fight
Liverpool Echo
|October 01, 2025
SIR Keir Starmer is often accused of lacking a certain authenticity - of struggling to connect with the everyday people of Britain.
It is hard to capture with mere words the power and emotion that was catapulted around the main conference hall in Liverpool as Margaret Aspinall rose to the occasion in every single way.
Margaret, one of the most recognisable faces and a driving force of the fight for Hillsborough justice, truth and real change, was an incredibly fitting choice - not just because the Labour government has just laid a Hillsborough Law in Parliament - but because she is someone who speaks from the heart.
Barely looking at any notes, the woman whose son went to a football match at the age of 18 and never came home had the gathered crowd totally transfixed as she hit out at the corrupt forces that meant her family and so many others were denied the truth they deserved for so long.
People will always be cynical about politicians and feel that having someone like Margaret introducing the under-pressure Prime Minister is just a good photo opportunity for him - but it is safe to say she would not have done it if she didn’t think it was right and she was strong in her acknowledgement of Sir Keir's crucial role in getting what will be a transformational Hillsborough Law into the place it is now.
