TARKOWSKI INSPIRED TO GET UP FOR THE CUP

- By CHRIS BEESLEY

Newcastle, Palace... so why not us?

CAPTAIN James Tarkowski insists Everton's players are determined this season to end the longest silverware drought in the club's history.

The Blues went to Anfield on Saturday for the 247th Merseyside derby and were met with chants of "Champions," and "You haven't won a trophy since 1995," by home fans in their 2-1 loss.

Although Everton have lifted silverware across nine separate decades, a feat of longevity that only Liverpool and Manchester United can better, their current barren spell now stretches back over three decades to when Joe Royle's side defeated Alex Ferguson's Manchester United 1-0 in the FA Cup final.

Tonight, David Moyes' men go to Molineux for a Carabao Cup third round tie to face a Wolverhampton Wanderers outfit they defeated 3-2 at their own ground on August 30.

The Blues have never won the competition but with Newcastle United having lifted it last season, beating Liverpool 2-1 in the final to end their 70-year domestic silverware drought and Crystal Palace securing the first major honour in their entire history by overcoming Manchester City 1-0 in the FA Cup final, Tarkowski believes his colleagues also have a shot at glory.

The 32-year-old said: "There's definitely an emphasis on us doing well in the cups this year and after winning the previous round, we want to go again. We're ready to go and looking forward to it.
