Listed status bid for iconic building

FIGHT TO PROTECT FIREPROOF DEPOSITORY FROM TOWER PLAN

A CAMPAIGN has been launched to protect a striking historic Liverpool building from plans to put a communications tower on its roof.

The former Coleman's Fire proof Depository building in Park Road, Toxteth, has stood for more than a century.

After being given a second chance at life when it was converted into studio flats almost a decade ago, the four-storey block has remained an iconic presence in the community.

Plans have now been submitted to stick a 6m-tall tower on its roof to support communications equipment.

Film student Alex Buckley, 19, has lived in the building for the past three months and is now launching a bid to get the building listed in order to stop the development going ahead.

Speaking to the ECHO, Mr Buckley compared the block to arguably Liverpool's most famous building, saying: "You don't see buildings like the Liver Building with masts on them."
