Calls for 'feminist' housing approach

A Scottish Green councillor and MSP have urged West Dunbartonshire Council to follow Glasgow and Edinburgh City Councils' lead in adopting a feminist approach to urban planning.

Feminist planning seeks to create safer, accessible, affordable and welcoming spaces for women and people of other marginalised genders. Examples include prioritising good street lighting to improve womens' safety at night, provision of public toilets and including girls when designing play parks.

Following a motion from Scottish Green Councillor Holly Bruce, Glasgow became the first feminist planning authority in Scotland and a Feminist Urbanism Political Oversight Group was set up. As a recent example of its impact, £1million of infrastructure funding will be allocated to planning projects which will improve the experience of women and girls in the city.
