'It's a shame there's no cup'

'WE WERE given a lifeline and we took it' admitted Charlie Penny after his last-gasp goal (probably) secured the Combined Counties League Premier South title for Redhill.

'It's a shame there's no cup'

Less than 24 hours before the league's final round of games, league leaders Jersey Bulls announced that, subject to appeal, they would be getting a three point deduction for fielding an ineligible player against Tooting & Mitcham United.

The deduction meant that, should Jersey not be successful in their appeal, the title was now in Redhill's hands - all they need to do was beat Guildford City away on Saturday.

However, with 90 minutes up and the game at the Spectrum still goalless - and with Jersey and AFC Whyteleafe both winning - it wasn't looking good for the Lobsters.

But Redhill have had a penchant for late goals this season and Saturday was no different - Penny firing home in the 93rd minute to the delight of the travelling supporters.

"To be fair, that's not my first important goal," the experienced striker admitted. “Right place and the right time. As a team, I think we've showed over our two games against Jersey a never say die attitude.

"We had plenty of chances in the first half against Guildford but didn't score any and it's gone down the wire, and then we've got one chance and taken it. I think it's credit to everyone at the club; the fans, everyone.
