Man jailed for breaking woman's jaw in brutal busy street robbery

Mrs Annie Edmondson, a Preston woman, appeared in the Preston Borough Police Court on the second Monday of October 1933 with her jaw, which had been fractured, swathed in a bandage.

In the dock was Frank Orrell, aged 28, motor mechanic, of Radcliffe, Bury who stood accused of robbery with violence.

The court heard that a fortnight earlier on Wednesday afternoon, Mrs Edmondson was in the Waggon & Horses pub at the Lord Street corner with Tithebarn Street when the accused came in to inn and ordered a beer. A short while later she left the public house and was stood on the corner of Lords Walk, with her handbag under her arm, talking to another woman when the accused crossed the street and came up to her. Going behind her, he got hold of her by the shoulders, turned her round, and hit her on the lower jaw with his clenched fist, knocking her to the ground.
