Trial stun for Garda Tasers

ALMOST 130 front line uniformed gardai are set to be given Taser stun guns - as part of a six month trial.

The Star has learned that Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan will this morning bring a memo to cabinet outlining plans to run the trial - to see if the Tasers should be available to thousands of front line officers.

At present, only the Emergency Response Unit, the Armed Support Unit and some members of the anti-terror Special Detective Unit have access to the Tasers - but that will change if the trial is deemed a success.
