IT WAS the second weekend of January and the last game of football that Gavin White would play as he knew it.

There's not much I could change

Indeed, to look at it, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the Dr Crokes-Errigal Ciaran All-Ireland club semi-final dispelled the need for any rule changes at all.

Kerry legend Maurice Fitzgerald referenced the game during the week in the context of discussing the new rules and described it as "an incredible gift".

"I thought that was the most amazing hour-and-a-half of football, that you could say, 'There's not much wrong with this' and there wasn't but they were just two teams that went after it," said Fitzgerald.

The problem for Crokes was that the game lasted an hour-and-a-half, instead of just the hour. And in the fallout afterwards, White was held responsible by some, particularly the geniuses on social media, for the fact that extra-time ensued.

In the fifth and final minute of injury-time, with Crokes leading by a point, he won a free close to his own 45.

With no handy kick-pass in sight, White eventually launched the ball forward. as far into Errigal territory as he could.
