Bloc's survival strategy as global pressures grow

IRISH people need to start gathering vital supplies like food, water and medication to prepare for any potential crises as anxiety over global instability grows, the European Union has warned.

The bloc stressed the importance of having a minimum of 72 hours' worth of emergency supplies as threats such as war, cyber attacks, adverse weather events and pandemics rise.

The stark announcement arrives at a time of heightened pressure in Europe due to ongoing tensions with Russia, and the effects of the Covid pandemic.

The warning was issued for all 450million EU citizens across its 27 member nations, including those residing in Ireland, to take immediate action.

THREATS

Preparedness and Crisis Management Commissioner, Hadja Lahbib, revealed the EU's new strategy for coping with future crises, urging: "Today's threats facing Europe are more complex than ever, and they are all interconnected."

Lahbib said it is important "to make sure people have essential supplies for at least 72 hours in a crisis".
