The 10 candidates forming a record field contesting the Hamilton by-election are now in their final week of campaigning ahead of polling day next Thursday, June 5.

Green candidate Ann McGuinness is focusing on the “widespread fly-tipping problem which is plaguing South Lanarkshire”, calling for stronger action and greater investment.

She said: “Too often our streets and country lanes are scarred by fly-tipping. It’s illegal, brings an area down, can be dangerous and is expensive for landowners and the council to clear up.

“In this year's council budget, Green councillor Kirsten Robb supported a re-introduction of one free bulky uplift and proposed £2 million for more enforcement.”

Conservative candidate Richard Nelson was again joined by party leader Russell Findlay for local canvassing, who praised the “hardworking” councillor and called him “far and away the best candidate to represent this area”.
