Heavy rains lash Mumbai; red alert as monsoon advances

Torrential rain pounded Mumbai overnight and into yesterday morning, crippling the city with widespread waterlogging, transport disruptions, and traffic snarls.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange to red alerts for Mumbai and surrounding suburban areas, warning of continued heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and squally winds up to 60 kmph.

The deluge marked the early onset of the southwest monsoon over Mumbai, with key areas like Nariman Point receiving 40 mm of rainfall in just one hour between 6 and 7am. Grant Road recorded 36 mm, Colaba 31 mm, and Byculla 21 mm. Suburban regions like Kurla, Sion, Dadar, and Parel were significantly affected, as waterlogged streets brought vehicular movement to a crawl. Visuals from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) highlighted the scale of the inundation.
