It's green for go as week of activities bring free events to honour nature

NEXT week will see an area of the city host Great Big Green Week - aimed at celebrating nature, building community and promoting sustainable living.

Running from June 7 to 15, the week-long festival will bring more than 50 free events to parks, churches, schools and public spaces across the Littleover and Blagreaves area.

Following the success of its inaugural year, organiser Ali Davies-Marsh, an NHS worker, says the event has "snowballed" thanks to growing support from local groups and residents.

"It's a week where I hope to give to the community my passion and enthusiasm for our wonderful outdoor spaces," said Ali.

"Whilst benefitting the community and reducing social isolation."

From bat walks to bug hunts, energy advice drop-ins to orienteering, the programme is designed to offer something for all ages with a strong emphasis on accessibility, community spirit, and practical climate action.

Now in its second year, Great Big Green Week is a celebration of sustainability, community connection, and the natural spaces that shape the south Derby suburb.

Events include bat walks, eco markets, a community picnic, orienteering, butterfly counts, crown green bowling, prayer walks, and litter picks.

New this year is a primary school art competition inviting children to design a green mascot representing the community's environmental values. The week also features interactive sports, nature trails, and live music, ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy while connecting with nature and each other.

The initiative aims to inspire residents of all ages to engage with local green spaces and sustainable practices through a wide range of free and inclusive activities.

Originally launched with just two months of planning in 2024, the event has expanded significantly for 2025. Organisers have applied lessons from its first run to scale up both its ambition and impact.

"This year my mindset has been to think bigger," said Ali.

"I think that's the biggest thing I've learnt from last year. It can be as big as people want it to be.
