BEN DEMPSEY felt like a fraud at times counting down to his comeback ~ as wild as that might sound.

But the Ayr skipper is adamant the scope for his side to scale the table was always genuine in the face of a slow start.

A hairline fracture at the back of his knee suffered during last season's run-in meant he didn't start until matchday six of this one.

The midfielder, whose Honest Men will look for a fourth win in five at home to Morton, said: “It wasn't like a muscle injury where you have to build yourself back up. It was just waiting for the bone to heal.

“The specialist said I just needed to give it time, let nature heal. It was a weird injury, you go from nothing to 100. I'd done nothing for four months, then they told me I was good to go and I was running the next day.
