BURTON Athletic Club opened the new Midland League programme with victory in a home fixture at Shobnall.

After promotion last year the team are now in Midlands Counties AA Track & Field Division Two against some of the Midlands top clubs includ-ing Cannock & Stafford AC.

Also making up the division are Cheltenham & County Harriers, Halesowen A & CC, Newport Harriers, Nuneaton Harriers and Yate & District AC.

Burton won by almost 100 points to give them a real platform for the remaining matches.

They got off to a great start with the throwers in dominant form with a win in the javelin by Stewart Cawson with 47.45m, under-17s Oliver Scattergood winning the B event with 39.57.

The women won A, B and C events through Isabelle Fellows (41.06), Isla Rogers, on her Burton debut (36.17) and Annette Webster (18.41).

There was also been a triple win in the women’s hammer through Maddie Hughes (37.81), Jenna Galiszewski (29.75) and Rachel Burke (20.27).

Hughes also won the discus with 29.08, Galiszewski taking the B (23.93).

The only women throw points dropped were in the shot with Galisze-wski fourth and Fellows winning the B.

The men dominated the shot with a win for Marcus Francis (14.63) and Ben Acton in the B (10 84).

Three wins came in the discus, with a personal best and club record for Fran-cis, throwing 51.21, Acton (40 95) and George Kugelmann (30.38).
