SOUTHVILLE residents say they walk and cycle "probably more than other parts of Bristol" but still oppose plans for a liveable neighbourhood.

More than 2,000 petitioners are calling on Bristol City Council to "Stop Southville Roadblocks" as bollards and planters could soon be installed.

Several streets in Southville could soon see "modal filters" blocking cars and vans but allowing people to walk and cycle through. These could either be bollards, planters or bus gates. A week is left of the council's public consultation on the South Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood.

Because so many people signed a petition against the modal filters, councillors on the transport policy committee debated the controversial plans on Thursday, October 23. They heard from campaigners about why some local residents believe there is no need for such drastic changes.
