Sausage firm's gift to local town

- By GAVIN JONES

Meat master Marsh left a legacy that many won't know about

MARSH & Baxters, the Black Country sausage and pie makers of legend, will need no introduction for most readers.

Their huge factory in Brierley Hill was a big local employer, and their wares were popular right across the region and far beyond. Though long ago closed, the firm's name lives on via the recreation of a Marsh & Baxter's shop on the Black Country Living Museum's 1940s-1960s street.

And following a mention of the firm in the Bugle last November, reader Royston Slim of Kinver contacted us to point out an often overlooked legacy of the famous old firm. Royston wrote:

"It is a legacy of the firm of Marsh & Baxter, in Kinver, that is so important to the area, in that the Edward Marsh Playing Fields and Centre were bequeathed to the area in perpetuity.
