Cybercrime in the crosshairs

The combatting of transnational crime, particularly along Thailand's border with Cambodia, will be significantly escalated, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra announced yesterday.

Speaking after a high-level security meeting attended by related ministries — including digital economy and society (MDES), foreign affairs, interior, and national security agencies — Ms Paetongtarn said such moves are aimed at cutting off illicit revenue streams and bolstering national security.

She said Thailand is ready to lead the regional fight against cross-border crime, especially cybercrime and online fraud, such as call centre scams, which have tarnished the country's international image and harmed citizens globally.

According to United Nations data, Cambodia has become a global epicentre for organised cybercrime, with an illicit industry valued at over 600 billion baht.

It is estimated that 40-60% of Cambodia's GDP may be linked to scam operations, including widespread money laundering, said the premier.

Ms Paetongtarn said the Thai government will take decisive and coordinated action, particularly in seven key border provinces, through measures such as enhanced border controls, stricter checkpoints and regulated opening hours at border crossings.
