According to the American Hospital Association, the nation’s 6,000-plus hospitals are host to more than 34 million patient admissions each year. And based on its position as the state with the highest population density, New Jersey is home to many of these patients and hospital facilities.

New Jersey has long taken pride in the strength of its hospitals, many of which are continually recognized among the best health care facilities in America. And the Garden State has much to brag about, as shared in the following statistics compiled by the New Jersey Hospital Association (NJHA). The association is more than 100 years old and encompasses nearly 400 hospitals, health systems, nursing homes, home health agencies, hospice providers, and other health care-related organizations statewide.

FOR EXAMPLE, DID YOU KNOW?

• New Jersey is home to 70 acute care hospitals as well 42 specialty hospitals providing rehabilitation, psychiatric, and long-term acute care — for a total of 112 hospitals delivering comprehensive care across the state.

• Hospital-based emergency departments in New Jersey provide care and comfort to more than 2.25 million individuals annually.

• According to the NJHA, 217,000 surgeries were performed and 100,000 babies were delivered in New Jersey hospitals in 2023.
