Would this protected status bring welcome recognition and attention - or overcrowding and problems for farmers?
From the 80-metre cliffs of the Mull of Galloway, with their spectacular gannet colonies, to the vast and beautiful Luce Sands, the artists' town of Kirkcudbright and The Merrick - the highest point in southern Scotland - Galloway appears to have it all.
So is it the perfect location for Scotland's third national park, after the Cairngorms and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs? Perhaps not.
In July, the Scottish Government announced that Galloway is now its preferred site to be designated a national park - which would make it the UK's 16th area with that status.
