This unsung, unpaid army of workers is vital for rural Britain

There is one word to describe the powerful force that today and every day cherishes and protects the British countryside and its rich diversity of fauna and flora, casting a metaphorical safety net across the landscape.

That word is volunteers.

Five of our biggest nature-based organisations have around 100,000 of them. And there are many thousands more, helping maintain the social fabric of rural Britain by filling in gaps left by conventional services, such as public transport and welfare, and providing companionship and community spirit in remote areas.

Volunteers come in all shapes and sizes, ages and abilities but what they have in common is passion, dedication and a willingness to give up their spare time. Perhaps you have been, or still are, a volunteer - around 21% of rural residents give up some of their time at least once a month.
