Build and install this classic countertop to add character and craftsmanship to your kitchen—without breaking the bank

I've spent a lot of time researching countertop options for my new-to-me 1899 home, looking for something warm, classic and true to the house's character.

- Choose the right wood. Hard maple is ideal—it resists dings and gouges, and its tight, closed grain makes it safer for food prep. Open-grain woods such as oak or ash are more susceptible to contamination.
- Purchase thicker lumber. You'll lose some material during sanding, so buy boards at least ⅛ to ¼ in. thicker than the planned finish thickness.
- Get help from the mill. Consider saving yourself time, effort and sandpaper by having rough-sawn boards planed and/or sanded to your requested size before bringing them home.
