Navigating the challenges and discovering hope

The journey through Alzheimer's diagnosis and treatment

Imagine a world where memories fade like footprints in the sand, leaving behind an enigmatic emptiness. This is the reality faced by millions of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive neurological disorder that affects memory, thinking, reasoning and daily functioning. The journey through Alzheimer’s diagnosis and treatment is a complex and emotional one, marked by challenges, scientific breakthroughs, and rays of hope that shine through the clouds of uncertainty.

It is the most common cause of dementia, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. With a rapidly aging global population, the incidence of Alzheimer’s is on the rise, highlighting the urgency for greater awareness and research efforts.

What Happens in the Brain?

The hallmark of this condition is the accumulation of two types of abnormal protein deposits in the brain: beta-amyloid plaques and tau tangles. Beta-amyloid plaques form when fragments of a protein called beta-amyloid clump together, disrupting communication between brain cells. Tau tangles, on the other hand, are twisted fibres of tau protein that accumulate within neurons, leading to their malfunction.

These protein aggregates trigger inflammation and damage brain cells, disrupting neural networks and causing cognitive decline. As the disease progresses, the brain’s structure deteriorates, impacting memory, behaviour, and the ability to perform daily tasks.
