Spotting Impetigo Early Tips for Keeping Skin Healthy

Impetigo is a common bacterial skin infection that primarily affects infants and young children, though it can also occur in adults. Characterized by red sores that can rupture, ooze, and form a yellowish-brown crust, impetigo is highly contagious but easily treatable with proper care. Early detection is key to preventing the spread of the infection and ensuring a swift recovery.

What Causes It?

imageImpetigo is primarily caused by two types of bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. These bacteria can enter the skin through minor cuts, insect bites, or other breaks in the skin’s barrier. The infection often starts in areas prone to irritation, such as around the nose, mouth, hands, and feet.

In some cases, impetigo may develop as a secondary infection, where the bacteria infect skin that has already been compromised by another condition, such as eczema or scabies.
