A pioneer in the field of urology, his dedication to patient care and groundbreaking work in Prostatic Artery Embolisation (PAE) has transformed countless lives. In conversation with Urban Melange, he shares his inspiring story, philosophy, and vision for urology.

What inspired you to pursue a career in urology over other medical specialties?

1 in 8 men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime. Only as a urologist could I read, study, research, and understand this deadly disease. Only then was it possible for me to nip it in the bud. Choosing urology over other specialties was the obvious choice. Today, I am proud to say that I have been successful in completely curing this disease and removing the Damocles’ sword hanging over every man’s head.

I have achieved this through PAE – Prostatic Artery Embolization. After other medical or surgical treatments for prostate enlargement, patients often complain of retrograde ejaculation – meaning semen does not come out, which can affect their partner's satisfaction and strain relationships, sometimes even leading to depression or extra-marital affairs. Additionally, other endourological procedures carry the risk of developing urethral strictures. As the late Professor Hattangadi Shashadari Bhatt, the father of urology, said: “Once a stricture, lifelong a stricture.”

PAE has no risk of urethral stricture because the male urethra is never touched or traversed. There are also no medications required for the prostate. Medications for BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) also result in retrograde ejaculation.
