After her parents split when she was a baby, Madison McGhee was raised by her mother, Glenda Hawley, in Charleston, W.V. She has hazy memories of visits with her dad; he died of a heart attack when she was 6. At least that’s what she was told. But a visit with her father’s family when she was 16 left her with a chilling feeling—they seemed to know something more sinister had happened to John Cornelius “J.C.” McGhee. “I had a physical reaction,” recalls Madison, now 28. “I hunched forward, and the wind was knocked out of my lungs.”

Sitting in the booth of a chain restaurant later that day, she asked her mom, who revealed the truth: Her father was murdered, shot in the doorway of his home in Bridgeport, Ohio, on July 11, 2002.
