SPORTS BROADCASTING IN INDIA: THE RISING GIANT OF LIVE ENTERTAINMENT
Digital Studio
|April 2025
India's sports broadcasting is evolving beyond cricket, embracing digital innovation and regional sports. Free streaming, Al-driven highlights, and ultra-HD content are transforming viewership, with mobile-first consumption on the rise. Despite challenges like piracy, the industry's growth is fueled by tech advancements and increasing investments.
-
In a nation where cricket has long been the religion, sports broadcasting in India is changing fundamentally. Beyond only cricket, the industry now includes kabaddi, football, badminton, and even fledgling leagues like volleyball and table tennis. India's sports media sector is set for significant progress given a young, technologically savvy population with rising disposable money. Though worldwide statistics show sports as the most resilient content category, India presents a unique case—a country where regional sports are gaining traction, where traditional broadcast and digital streaming coexist, and where the next phase of growth could reshape Asia's media environment.
THE FINANCIAL POWERHOUSE: CRICKET AND BEYOND
Cricket remains the undisputed king of Indian sports TV, with IPL alone generating 85% of the nation's sports ad revenue and its 2023-2027 rights selling for ₹48,390 crore ($6.2B). The fierce bidding war between Viacom18 and Disney Star highlights its unmatched commercial appeal. However, other sports are rising—Pro Kabaddi League drew 200M viewers in 2022, ISL secured a ₹2,500 crore deal, and leagues like Ultimate Kho Kho and PBL are gaining traction. Unlike the West's pay-per-view model, India's sports broadcasting thrives on ad revenue, with brands investing billions—₹25 lakh for a 10-second spot during the 2023 ICC World Cup.
