Removing the Limits of Video Connectivity: An Interview with Roberto Musso of NDI
Digital Studio
|December 2025
As the worlds of broadcast, enterprise collaboration, and content creation continue to converge, NDI® has emerged as the global language for video over IP. What began as a disruptive alternative to traditional cabling has evolved into a foundational software-powered standard — connecting creators, businesses, and technologies across every layer of modern production.
-
In this article, we explore NDI’s evolution, its underlying technology, and the vision guiding its next chapter. We begin with a brief overview of how NDI works and its role in the connected multimedia landscape, and then turn to an in-depth interview with Roberto Musso, Technical Director of NDI, who shares insights on innovation, interoperability, AI, and the future of video connectivity.
TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW: HOW NDI WORKS
NDI® (Network Device Interface) is a globally adopted connectivity standard that enables high-quality, low-latency, frame-accurate video, audio, and metadata to move over standard IP networks. Today, it is used by millions worldwide and powers the industry’s largest IP ecosystem. NDI’s mission is centered on removing the limits of video connectivity — ensuring video can move as freely as any other data type. It bridges professional broadcast, ProAV, enterprise collaboration, education, healthcare, and consumer content creation, becoming a universal layer that allows devices and platforms to communicate seamlessly.
While modern multimedia systems are expected to be seamlessly networked, software-based, and cloud-augmented, users often face friction caused by incompatible codecs, device types, and protocols. Interoperability is the defining barrier, and the key challenge NDI aims to solve. Through a software-defined, multi-industry approach, NDI abstracts this friction, operating across virtually any hardware or software environment.
