Brian Howes unearths some nostalgic collectables that might be discarded as worthless junk but actually have a value to today's collectors. Can you estimate what each object might be worth and pick out which one is the big-money item?

1 Shop with Mother

I must admit that shopping with my mother as an infant was always a bit of a mixed experience. Naturally, I loved toy shops, sweet shops and pet shops, but Mum liked spending time buying clothing, linen and china pottery, and I often became bored. This lovely Ladybird book shows how shops used to be.

2 A little cracker

When Lesney Toys launched its famous Models of Yesteryear range in 1956, the craze for collecting each of the vehicles took off quickly. It was often the older generation who were the biggest fans of these little metal masterpieces. This Jacob & Co Ltd's biscuit delivery van proved to be one of the most popular Yesteryear models in the first series.

3 Bird and a wire

The 1930s were innovative days when it came to advertising all manner of goods, and tobacco was no exception. Tobacconist’s shops were brimming with point-of-sale material including innovative figurines like this lovely little Blackbird. It was one of a small range of figures made by WD & HO Wills of Bristol. The worm is actually a piece of electrical wire.

A Secret Worth Sharing

It's hard to believe that the 176- room DoubleTree by Hilton Bath was once called \"the ugliest building in Bath\". However, the hotel – which was built in 1973, during a period of clearance and development known as \"the Sack of Bath\" - now looks more in keeping with the Unesco World Heritage Site.
