January Really Was Divorce Month For Celebrities

Longtime couples like Alba and Warren, Simpson and Johnson and Routh and Ford all revealed they were done at the start of 2025.

In legal circles, January is a notoriously busy time thanks to a surprising trend — it's when everyone decides to get divorced! OK, not everyone, but celebrity couples, including Jessica Alba and Cash Warren, Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson and Courtney Ford and Brandon Routh, are three high-profile examples of a universal pattern that family lawyers clocked years ago.

So, with some legal firms noticing an increase in divorce applications by as much as 33 percent every January, why does the first month of the year see so many couples deciding to call it quits? After all, it's not just those three — the start of 2025 has also seen the demise of long-term couples Kaia Gerber and Austin Butler and Matt James and Rachael Kirkconnell. No surprise January is also considered Breakup Month.
