Boom Supersonic plans an engine

The fog surrounding Boom's ambitions has been cleared. The supersonic jet startup said that it will create its engine for its Mach 1.7 jet with three partners after there was no willingness shown on part of major manufacturers.

Denver-based Boom's Mach 1.7 airliner will use a new-design engine called Symphony to be developed by a company with roots in military drones instead of commercial aviation. The new Boom-led propulsion system will be designed and optimized for the plane.

According to Boom, it will partner with three entities to make the engine a reality, including Florida Turbine Technologies, which is a part of Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, to assist with the design. The aircraft manufacturer has also tapped Standard Aero for maintenance, and General Electric subsidiary GE Additive for consulting on metal additive manufacturing, which is also known as 3D printing.
