THE RELIGION OF SPEED...

Every year, in the middle of summer, when the British countryside is resplendent in lush green drapery and awash with the smell of wildflowers in full bloom, petrolheads descend onto a picturesque neighborhood that sits just outside Chichester in West Sussex, and proceed to drive at breakneck speeds along the driveway of the Duke of Richmond and call it a hill climb.

imageThat’s the Goodwood Festival of Speed in a nutshell, and it helps that the Duke of Richmond is the one organising the run through his estate and driveway and inviting these people over, else the local constabulary would have had their hands full, innit?

imageAs the name suggests, the Goodwood Festival is literally a festival to celebrate the human quest to go faster, always a bit faster than before. Cars from all eras of the evolution of automobile are usually in attendance, from something like the infamous ‘Beast of Turin’ Fiat with a 27-litre engine (no, it’s not a typo, it’s 27-litre and not 2.7-litre!) to the Praga Bohema, which has a 3.8-litre engine.

imageThis year, the celebration centred around 75 years of Formula 1 and 60 years of Sir Gordon Murray, a disruptor in Formula 1 before the term was even coined. Let's take in the action from the ultimate summer picnic event for the petrolheads.
