GWM HAVAL H6GT FROM $44,990

The Haval H6 is GWM's mid-sized SUV to fight against everything from the Toyota RAV4 to the Honda CR-V.

The H6GT comes with a sleeker body style and more equipment as part of its premium sales pitch.

Whereas the regular H6 is priced from $33,990 drive-away, the H6GT kicks off at $44,990.

Plus, there's a plugin hybrid EV (PHEV) version that costs $53,990.

Whereas the regular H6GT gets a 150kW/320Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo driving the front wheels, the PHEV relies mostly on two electric motors driving all four wheels; the one on the front axle makes 130kW and the rear 135kW.

A 110kW/230Nm 1.5-litre turbo chimes in at higher speeds or to create electricity and takes the combined claimed outputs to 321kW and 762Nm.

Each comes packed with gear, including a panoramic sunroof, head-up display, 360-degree camera, ambient lighting, dual-zone ventilation and 19-inch alloy wheels shod in Michelin tyres. There's also a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and 12.3-inch central infotainment screen. That screen incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but for both you need to plug a phone in, which makes the wireless phone charger less useful.
