FORD RANGER RAPTOR FROM $90,440

The Ford Ranger Raptor, priced at $90,440, has a twin turbo 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine backed by a 10-speed auto and permanent, dual range all-wheel-drive.

It's a significant upgrade. The V6's 292kW and 583Nm are almost double the power of the previous model's 2.0-litre turbodiesel four, while torque has increased by 16 percent.

Ford engineers claim the V6 Raptor is somewhere in the 5.5 to 6.0-seconds mark, and seat of the pant impressions say this is pretty accurate.

The previous model took 10-11 seconds to reach the speed limit.

Four-wheel disc brakes are an improvement from the previous front-disc/rear-drum setup, but braking and grip on bitumen are compromised by very aggressive all-terrain tyres.

The bros who have bought a Raptor — or who want to buy one — have probably just thrown this magazine across the room in protest at this observation.

For the grownups still reading, it's worth noting the 285/70 17 BF Goodrich tyres are epic off-road, but they are also pretty dicey on wet bitumen.
