WE CATCH UP WITH TARIK CURRIMBHOY AT HIS STUDIO IN NEW YORK, AFTER HIS FIRST SOLO SHOW IN INDIA.

Tarik Currimbhoy's sculptures have a pure, meditative quality. A viewer can stand mesmerized for hours watching the elegant, geometric shapes move back and forth.

A polymath whose training in the arts, industrial design and architecture informs his practice, Currimbhoy concluded two shows in India recently, which explored the sculptor's works: Tender Forces at Akara Contemporary in Mumbai and Painting with Fire: Jeram Patel and Tarik Currimbboy at the Museum of Art & Photography (MAP) in Bengaluru. Both shows dove into his exploration of pattern and movement the former through stainless steel and quartz, the latter through burned wood.

Born in Mumbai in 1954, he set up his architectural practice in New York City in 1983. "I have had solo shows in New York, Palm Beach, Indiana and Dubai, but this is my first solo show in India, and I feel it is like coming home," the multidisciplinary artist says. "It is like winding back the clock, introducing all my old school friends, my family and art lovers to my 'magical world of sculpture"." He maintains a large studio in upstate New York as well as smaller ones in Manhattan and Mumbai, and fabricates in Jaipur, China and the US.
