Conceived originally in 1969-70 by artist Satish Gujral and architect Raj Rewal, and continually reimagined and expanded in subsequent decades, Gujral House in South Delhi has lived many lives.

- Writer Mohit Gujral Photographer Pankaj Anand

GUJRAL HOUSE

A space where home, studio and gallery merged, the house “became a sculpture in motion, ever responsive to the people who inhabit it, the shifting Delhi light and the passage of time,” writes his son and architect Mohit Gujral, who undertook restoration of the house early last year.

On the centenary of Satish Gujral’s birth year, the house opens to the public for the very first time.

Starting in the month of November this year, Gujral House will be the site of architecture and design exhibitions, talks, satellite events during India Art Fair and more.

NESTLED IN SOUTH DELHI, GUJRAL HOUSE DEFIES THE PASSAGE OF TIME a home that breathes, evolves and tells the story of a restless artist's lifelong dialogue with space. More than a residence, it has continually transformed to reflect the changing moods and mediums of my father, Satish Gujral. Conceived in 1969-70 alongside a young architect, Raj Rewal, it was one of their earliest collaborations and became a space where home, studio and gallery harmoniously merged.

This partnership sparked a dynamic architectural experiment—my father’s restless spirit pushed boundaries of levels, volumes, light and texture. The house became a sculpture in motion, ever responsive to the people who inhabit it, the shifting Delhi light and the passage of time.
