At 60, artist Subodh Gupta is finally homeward-bound after spending three decades on the road, buzzing around the world carrying the mundane everydays in his bags to transform them into ambitious artistic spectacles.

THREE DECADES SINCE HE LEFT PATNA, SUBODH GUPTA IS HOMEWARD BOUND WITH "THE WAY HOME", A SOLO SHOW OF HIS SCULPTURES AND PAINTINGS AT THE BIHAR MUSEUM.

Gupta indeed adds the “extra” to the ordinary doohickeys cluttering our households, lying neglected but seldom forgotten, and moulds them into prodigious artworks towering over our heads that have found homes in the greatest galleries and museums of the world. But this moment “is truly special”, he says about his solo show The Way Home, on display at the Bihar Museum in his hometown Patna until 15 February. “The show represents my connection to my country as well as my birthplace and is a coming home of sorts, and going back to the roots of it all—college, family and the railways. So much of my work over the years has been returning here,” Gupta says.
