TV vet Dr Scott on the pandemic pet crisis
-
The past two years have seen a massive rise in animal ownership, including a huge 30% increase in the UK dog population. We spoke to This Morning’s resident vet, Dr Scott Miller, about the amount of pets being abandoned, how celebs are leading the way in adopting and his advice for pet owners with clingy animals.
Buying pets in lockdown was big business, wasn’t it?
Many people working from home thought it was the perfect time to get a dog. In a lot of ways they were right, because they had the time to do the basic training needed. But we were living in a strange environment.
There were so many pandemic puppies that now there’s an epidemic of separation anxiety, because they simply haven’t been left alone. People are going back to work, school or university and, as a result, a lot of these poor dogs are ending up in rescue centres.
So we need to get the ‘adopt, don’t shop’ message out there?
