Reminiscences
Question: Was the action of the three gunas seen in the lives of the direct disciples?
Maharaj: Once, Raja Maharaj sat inert for several days together – he didn’t bathe or walk or do anything at all. Ulcers appeared in the folds of his belly. Then Sharat Maharaj [Swami Saradananda] forcibly bathed him and made him walk. He clearly saw that his body had been possessed by tamoguna.
Our life is just like a sheet of steel. It has been kept rolled up by force – it is constantly trying to expand. Dharma is भूतभावोद्भवकरः(Gita 8:3) to live and to make progress. Moksha or liberation is beyond this state of living and making progress. It is very difficult to understand these truths. Day and night people are suffering so much! It feels terrible to say that God is the creator. But the fact is when we cry out saying, “We are lost and undone”, the Jnani sees that the person is screaming unnecessarily, for nothing is lost or undone. This is akin to his suffering owing to a fire in his dream. Those who are awake see that the person is suffering in a dream, he has not lost even a wee bit.
Question: Why is it that Master Mahasaya and Swamiji have different views about work?
