Going UP! The best way to celebrate...

SOUTHAMPTON stand in Middlesbrough's way of a first trip to Wembley since May 2015, where they will get the chance to compete for promotion back to the Premier League. On that occasion 11 years ago, Boro were beaten by Norwich City in the play-off final. But they used the heartbreak as fuel to fire their promotion bid in the next 12 months. Having spent only one season back up in the top flight, Boro are now nine years since their last taste of top-flight football. But if they can dispatch Southampton in the semi-finals, and then Hull City or Millwall in the final, that wait will come to an end. Boro had spent so much of the season looking on course to win promotion automatically. But having missed out on that to Coventry and Ipswich, they now look to do so via the play-offs - a means that carries one big advantage, and one big disadvantage.
