An incredibly diverse country, Turkey is a mesmerising mix of Mediterranean, Balkan and Asian influences, having been colonised throughout history by different empires. The father of modern-day Turkey is Kemal Atatürk, a soldier who salvaged the Turkish state from the Ottoman Empire and united it into a modern, secular republic, over which he ruled as president (1923 – 1938). With over 500 islands and islets scattered across its seas, ranging from the cosmopolitan to the quaint, today’s Turkey offers visitors endless exploration of ancient ruins, cobblestone stress, and the glimmering blue sea.
