Dear Friends
I am sure all of you are interested in reading, as you are currently reading your favourite magazine Gokulam. For centuries, stories have fascinated human beings and continue to do so. Stories are interesting, informative and entertaining. In this new series, we will meet a set of brilliant storytellers, performers, writers, authors who believe in the power of a story in any form. I hope you enjoy these interviews and explore their work further.
1. What made you decide to write books for children?
It creates a lot of discipline and refinement as you want to present complex ideas in simple language without any compromise.
2. Your books mainly revolve around mythology... Do you think mythology is relevant today? How and why? Specifically vis-a-vis children
Justice is a mythic concept. It does not exist in nature. Animals do not understand it or ask for it. They follow the jungle way: might is right. Our stories and rituals keep telling us about just heroes and kings. Without mythology, how will we establish justice as a value? Without myth, there will be no good and bad, right and wrong, heaven and hell, God and Devil, deva and asura, prophet and avatara in the world.

Earthy Expressions
Folk art and tribal art are easily recognizable - bright colours, bold strokes, quaint ways of representing people and animals. Many actually tell a tale! India being a vast country and with so many agricultural communities and tribes living close to nature, many art forms have evolved. Many have all but disappeared. Fortunately, there is an interest in such traditional art forms and efforts are being made to revive some of them. In the next few months, we will embark on a journey learning more about some of such art forms.
