Can animals make friends?

THERE ARE MANY REASONS WHY ANIMAL species band together with others of their kind – for protection in numbers, to achieve a common goal, to safeguard young or to maximise breeding opportunities. But are any of these relationships true friendships in our human understanding of the word?

ALL YOU EVER NEEDED TO KNOW ABOUT THE Tarantula hawk wasp

NEITHER ARACHNID NOR BIRD, THE tarantula hawk is a large wasp (there are over 130 known species) that gets its confusing name from a fearsome habit of preying on tarantulas and other large spiders to feed its larval young.

Which animal has the best sense of direction?

DOMESTIC HOMING PIGEONS ARE famed for their acute sense of direction and uncanny ability to find their way home - sometimes from distances of more than 10,000km. During World War I, as part of his service in the US Army Signal Corps, a plucky little pigeon named Cher Ami flew 40km through intense German fire to deliver a critical message to American forces. His ability to fly with accuracy and speed saved the lives of 194 US soldiers and later earned Cher Ami the French Croix de Guerre medal.

Who owns the ocean?

LAND CAN BE DIVIDED UP SOMEWHAT clearly (although there are disputes about who owns what), but what happens when it comes to water? Technically, no one owns the ocean, but some countries have jurisdiction in some seas.

KATE BRADBURY

ON A MILD AUTUMN DAY I MIGHT catch a red admiral butterfly taking the last of summer’s nectar, basking in sunshine or flying among the rooftops against a brilliant blue sky. I keep a mental log of my last butterfly sighting of the year, which soon becomes my first butterfly of the new year. Both are always a red admiral.

What's the largest animal gathering on Earth?

PEOPLE LOVE A PARTY. BUT AS POPULOUS as our species is, the headcounts at our gatherings don't match those of other species. The Maha Kumbh Mela, a Hindu pilgrimage in Prayagraj, India, drew more than 660 million people in January 2025. But this horde - thought to be the largest in human history – pales in comparison to the groups formed by our animal relatives.

Do plants have memory?

TO HAVE TRUE MEMORY AN ORGANISM requires brain cells to store experiences through the action of sophisticated neurotransmitters. Plants lacking brain cells therefore cannot be said to have that capacity for memory. However, there is evidence that some plants adapt their characteristics based on 'remembered' experiences.
