Life gets ever more complicated for financial-planner-turned-money-launderer Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) in the second series of Netflix’s gritty crime drama Ozark.

Last season, Marty uprooted his wife Wendy (Laura Linney) and their two kids from Chicago to Lake Ozark, a small resort town in Missouri, after a money-laundering operation for a Mexican drug syndicate went wrong and the cartel killed his business partner.

To save himself and his family, quick-thinking Marty convinced crime boss Camino Del Rio (Esai Morales) that he could launder its dirty money at the resort by buying up local businesses – but, in doing so, he crossed local gangster Jacob Snell (Peter Mullan).

THE BIG GAMBLE 

Marty was able to talk himself out of trouble again and got Jacob to produce heroin for the cartel to sell. All was going well until Jacob’s hot-tempered wife Darlene (Lisa Emery) shot dead Del Rio.

As the new 10-part series opens, the syndicate sends ruthless, Chicago-based attorney Helen Or Pierce (Janet McTeer) to find out what’s happened to its head man.

‘As the new representative of the drugs gang, she’s there to remind Marty of the weight and the stakes of the cartel’s threat,’ explains 49-year-old Bateman.
