Sony said we couldn’t review Hideo Kojima’s latest game unless we finished it. Fine, we said. Then we played it
-
Well, at least we finally get to preview Hideo Kojima’s new game. With 40 hours on the clock, we’re barely halfway through Death Stranding: that would not be enough to base a review on even if we hadn’t agreed to abstain from reviewing the game until we’d seen its credits roll – something we’re not sure has ever been asked of us before.
Ever since its announcement, Kojima has shrouded his game beneath a veil of secrecy. Forty hours later, we’re not entirely sure why, at least not without breaking out the conspiracy theories. It is a delivery simulator, as protagonist Sam Porter Bridges (Norman Reedus) works his way across a ruined United States. Starting in the far east, his ultimate goal is the west coast, stopping off at cities, distro centres and outposts, connecting them to the ‘chiral network’ and bringing the nation back online, and its people back together. In practice, the route is far more complex than that – there’s a tremendous amount of to, fro and backtracking – but the game only rarely departs from its core concept of having you load up with cargo, take it somewhere far away, and then do it all again.
Said cargo is physically based, and forms the game’s central mechanic, which is unfortunate given it’s a gigantic pain in the backside. Turn too quickly, struggle on an incline or pick up too much speed on a slope and Bridges will tip over, requiring a squeeze of one of the triggers to have him tighten his backpack strap, or a press of both at once to stabi

Possessor(s)
After three rounds of layoffs this year and Hyper Light Breaker’s curtailed development in early access, a lot seems to rest for Heart Machine on this plucky Metroidvania side project. The studio has an obvious knack for conjuring up fascinating fantasy worlds, but since its compact debut, Hyper Light Drifter, it’s been less obvious whether it can manage projects of a larger scale. And perhaps, on that count, even the modest Possessor(s) isn’t quite modest enough — it feels as much a victim of the company’s production woes as a showcase for its creative talent.

Street Fighter 6
Superstition might suggest that even numbers are more auspicious for the series, but it's fairer to say that Capcom learned from the mistakes of Street Fighter V and launched a fighting game that doesn't just feel like a full package, but one that has foundations to build on in future updates.

The Outer Worlds 2
There's always a risk in imitating something regarded as a classic: if it offers a template for success, it could just as easily invite unfavourable comparison. Obsidian Entertainment's Fallout: New Vegas has gained that reputation in the 15 years since its release, and while the original The Outer Worlds, led by Fallout creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, referenced that series without aping it, the sequel zeroes in on New Vegas as its direct source of inspiration. This explains both why The Outer Worlds 2 is a success and why it can't quite stand tall as a creation with its own identity.

HIDEO KOJIMA CRITICIZES MODERN GAMES FOR LACKING ORIGINALITY: “EVEN THE VISUALS AND SYSTEMS ARE PRETTY MUCH THE SAME”
Legendary game designer Hideo Kojima is calling out the gaming industry's growing reliance on repetitive formulas, cautioning that too many modern titles look and feel the same. In a recent interview shared via Kojima Productions' social media and translated by fans across Japanese gaming forums, Kojima expressed concern over what he sees as a creativity plateau in mainstream development.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH CURRENT 212 OLYMPIA CHAMPION KAMAL ELGARGNI - GOING OUT THE CHAMP
Lee Haney did it in 1991. Dorian Yates did it in 1997. Flex Lewis did it in 2017. “What exactly?” you might ask. They all went out on top, retired from their respective divisions as winners on their terms, when they chose to. Current 212 Olympia champion Kamal Elgargni, originally from Libya— now living in my country of the U.K.— I decided to catch up with to find out more on perhaps one of the most unusual career paths of any IFBB pro competing today. It was only March 2018 that the then 46-year-old Kamal was making his long-overdue 212 pro debut shocking us all (not me, though; I’ll explain more later) and winning the Arnold Classic, beating out a-lister 212 names such as Jose Raymond (5th), Dave Henry (4th) and Charles Dixon (2nd). So many questions were thrown around after this surprise win and even more surprising pro debut at age 46. Naturally, this was not the typical series of events that would lead to a pro debut and yet here we were just 21 months later (at time of writing) sitting in Kamal’s front room discussing his competitive retirement.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach
To help us recall the rhythm of Kojima Productions' unique debut, we're asked to walk a mile — or thereabouts — in its protagonist's shoes. Eleven months after reconnecting a fractured USA, Sam Porter Bridges is in hiding with Lou, the government-owned pod-baby he's now secretly adopted. As the game begins, Sam gazes out over a remote peak with Lou strapped to his chest; our task is simply to guide them home. We begin to trot down bumpy slopes, learning once again to watch our step, hold the triggers to maintain balance, and wield the left stick with care.
